Baccarat is a simple game to learn! There are only a few moves you can make, and the terminology is easy to absorb.
The hand which is closest to 9 at the end of the round wins, but there's a couple of twists. Unlike Blackjack, where you're betting on your hand beating the Banker's, you can bet on the player's hand, the Banker's hand, or a tie in Baccarat. The card totals are also calculated differently.
Here's how the card values work:
- Face and 10 cards are worth 0
- Aces are worth 1
- Every other card is worth its face value
- When calculating the value of your hand, only count the last digit. For example, if the player receives a 5+6, the hand is worth 1, not 11. If the dealer receives a 9 + 9, the hand is worth 8, not 18. The hand closest to 9 at the end of the round wins, not the hand with the highest total.
Placing your Baccarat bets
After placing your bet, the Banker then deals out two cards each. In some cases, they will hand out a third card. The hand closest to 9 wins, and in the event of a tie, you'll either lose your bet or win a payout if you correctly predicted the outcome.
Third card rule
The Banker will draw a third automatically, so no need to worry about it. Even though the third card rules may appear confusing, you'll fully grasp them after a while.
- If the hand's value is between 0-5, then the Banker will draw a third card. Hands with 6-9 won't receive a third card.
- If the dealer has 3 points, a third card is drawn – unless the player's third card is an 8.
- If the dealer has 4 points, a third card is drawn – unless the player's third card is an 0,1,8, or 9.
- If the dealer has 5 points, a third card is drawn – unless the player's third card is between 4-7.
- If the dealer has 6 points, a third card is drawn – unless the player's third card is a 6 or 8.
Here's a full breakdown of when the Banker will draw a third card (D) or stand (S).

Side bets to spice up your gameplay
On top of the main bets (Banker, player hand, and tie), you can wager on two additional side bets; player pair and Banker pair.
When staking a wager on these bets, you'll win an extra payout if your chosen hand receives a pair of cards, e.g., 6-6 or Q-Q. The side bet only pays out for a pair—any other outcome results in a loss. However, the game proceeds as usual afterward. You can even play side bets only and forgo the game's main betting options. Side bets pay 11:1, which is why they're so popular.
Baccarat Odds and Payouts
Both the player and Banker bets payout 1:1. Betting $5 means you'll win $5 from the Banker. It's important to note that many online Baccarat tables take a small commission of 0.5% on each Banker bet win. This is because the Banker has slightly better odds than the player's hand.
Betting on a tie has lower odds, but the payout is much higher than the player and Banker bets, at 8:1.
The player or Dealer pair has even lower odds than the tie bet, which is why it pays 11:1.
Bet Type | Payout |
Dealer | 0.95:1 |
Player | 1:1 |
Tie | 8:1 |
Player or Dealer Pair | 11:1 |
